Overview

Hincapie Sportswear is the performance apparel brand of former Tour de France cyclist, George Hincapie. All their products are meticulously crafted under the oversight and experience of the Hincapie family. I designed a custom kit design platform to serve their riders and grow their business.

Opportunity

You shouldn’t have to be a designer to build a great looking custom kit. But most custom kit tools are cumbersome, time-consuming, and easy to mess up. Inevitably you end up having to review proofs and understand terms like “sublimation”. For a large portion of the market, it’s just too much work.

Our goal was to build a tool for “custom-lite”. Most riders don’t really want total control. They want to make simple, personal changes to professionally designed kits. They want guardrails to ensure they aren’t going to miss a critical step. And they want it all to be fast. So we designed a tool that makes it easy to do just that.

Design Details

One view to rule them all

Most tools require you to pick a specific kit before you can start any customizations. We created a custom interface that allows riders to quickly see customizations applied across every kit.

An easier color picker

Rather than giving users a complex chart of unprintable hues, I designed an interface that matches directly to printable pantones.

Intelligent guidance

Once you’ve made a color selection, the algorithm provides complimentary colors, making it quicker and easier to design a kit that feels custom and looks great.

Match your bike or brand

Customers can also select colors directly from their logo or search for their bike design for a perfect match.

Fine tune and share

Once you’ve made bulk customizations, we also build an interface to give you meticulous control. And we made it easy to save and share all these kits with your friends.
